Gigabytes Networking How-to

I.                    What you will need.
1.       1 Network Hub or Switch ( a crossover cable will also work when connecting only 2 computers.)
2.       1 Network cable per computer
3.       2 or more computers
4.       1 network card per computer
II.                  Setting up your network.
1.       Install your network cards into your computers.  Be sure that the cards were installed properly in the Control Panel/ System Properties/ Device Manager.
2.       With both computers turned off, connect the cables from your computers to the Hub.  Be sure you do not use the uplink port on the hub.
3.       Power up the first computer and go into the control panel.  Open the Network properties and be sure the following are installed:
A.      Client for Microsoft Networks  -and/or- Microsoft Family/Windows Logon
                                 B.      Your network card
C.      TCP/IP
4.       If these are not installed, Add them now and restart your computer.
5.       Go into the properties of TCP/IP and enter the following information:
A.      Enter a Unique IP address for this machine. (Ex. 100.100.100.1 or 100.100.100.2)
B.      Enter a subnet number.  These must be the same for all of your machines. (Ex. 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.254.0)
6.       Close out of the TCP/IP properties and click on the Identification tab.  Enter the following information:
A.      Your Unique computer name (Ex. BOBSCOMP, MAIN, JANDRCO)
B.      A domain name that all of the computers will use. (Ex. HOME, WORKGROUP, JIMMYNET)
7.       Finally, if you wish to share files, click the File and Print Sharing button on the configuration tab and select what you wish to share.
8.       Click Ok and restart the computer.
9.  Once you have restarted the computer, you can go into your My Computer and right-click on a drive you want the other computers to have access to and select Sharing... to setup the drive to share over the network.
Congratulations! Your Network is setup.
III.                Sharing Internet connections.
1.       Connect your broadband modem to the uplink port on your hub or install your broadband modem in the computer you will be designating as the server.
2.       For NT and Windows 2000 users, install a second network card in your machine and set that card’s TCP/IP up for your broadband connection.  If you are installing a broadband modem card into your computer, this is not necessary.
3.       For Windows 95/98, Add an additional TCP/IP on your server in Network Properties and configure for your broadband connection.  Note: this only needs to be done if you are connecting an external modem to the uplink port on your hub.
4.       Setup Proxyi.exe from the AnalogX folder on the Internet CD.  Be sure to view and print the read-me file for setup instructions.
5.       Be sure you setup a firewall like Zone Alarm or BlackIce Defender on your machine to prevent hacker attacks.  Zone Alarm is free and is available on the Gigabytes Internet CD.
