Protecting Yourself From E-mail Worms
In Outlook and Outlook Express, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself from E-mail viruses. Other programs have similar features. Consult the help file for your program for a list of those features and how to use them.
Removing the preview pane.

1. Go to View and click Layout...
|

| Uncheck "View Peview Pane" and click Apply and OK |

Controlling your messages.

When a message comes in with an attachment, you can right-click the message and got to Properties.

Click on the Details tab and then the Message Source button |

| You will come up to a screen similar to this: |

| Scroll through the message until you get to something that looks like this: |

| Just above where the gobledy-gook begins, you will see something like this: |
|
| Look for the Filename = ". This will tell you the filename of the attachment. You may have to scroll over to get all of it. |

| In this case, it was just an Excel file,
however, if the file has an extension (the last three letters in the file
name) like this
awesome.exe cool.scr patch.bat runme.dll pretty.com They are most likely a virus. Even if the E-mail is from someone you know. Some viruses try and trick you into thinking that it is a regular file by putting an additional extension on the file like this: awesome.doc.exe cool.xls.scr patch.txt.bat runme.mpg.dll pretty.grlz.jpeg.com Remember, it is the last three letters of the file that is really the extension, and not anything before no matter how many they put before it. |
