Protecting Yourself From E-mail Worms

In Outlook and Outlook Express, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself from E-mail viruses.  Other programs have similar features.  Consult the help file for your program for a list of those features and how to use them.

Removing the preview pane.

1. Go to View and click Layout...

Uncheck "View Peview Pane" and click Apply and OK

Controlling your messages.

When a message comes in with an attachment, you can right-click the message and got to Properties.

Click on the Details tab and then the Message Source button

You will come up to a screen similar to this:

Scroll through the message until you get to something that looks like this:

Just above where the gobledy-gook begins, you will see something like this:

Look for the Filename = ".  This will tell you the filename of the attachment.  You may have to scroll over to get all of it.

In this case, it was just an Excel file, however, if the file has an extension (the last three letters in the file name) like this

awesome.exe    cool.scr    patch.bat   runme.dll    pretty.com

They are most likely a virus. Even if the E-mail is from someone you know.  Some viruses try and trick you into thinking that it is a regular file by putting an additional extension on the file like this:

awesome.doc.exe  cool.xls.scr patch.txt.bat  runme.mpg.dll  pretty.grlz.jpeg.com

Remember, it is the last three letters of the file that is really the extension, and not anything before no matter how many they put before it.
